Edema Management Program

Edema will affect approximately 25-50% of patients who undergo axillary node surgery. Edema can also be caused by swelling secondary to chronic venous insufficiency, post-op surgical and hereditary. Patients who do not respond to diuretics and elevation are candidates for treatment.

What are the consequences of Edema?

  • Impairs the affected area.
  • Restricts joint movement.
  • Causes the skin to be dry and taut.
  • Tissues become hard and fibrotic, restricting
  • blood flow and oxygen.
  • Causes recurrent infections.
  • Blistering may increase leading to leakage and the development of serious wounds.

What can be done about Edema?

  • Options Home Health offers a combination of lymphatic massage as well as bandaging and compression, all provided by a lymphedema therapist.
  • Treatments are performed in conjunction with remedial exercises with the bandages, increasing lymphatic flow to promote edema reduction.
  • Patients are educated in the disease process and self care.
  • When appropriate, patients will be fitted for a compression sleeve & provided a compression pump for ongoing maintenance.

All patients are seen by a registered nurse prior to treatment. Patients needing assistance will be provided with a home health aide to assist with bathing and showering.

It is important to note that when patients receive this therapy at home there is no co-pay, no capitation and supplies are covered by Medicare.
