Providing Home OT Services

In-Home Occupational Therapy Services

As we age, we lose some of our ability to function independently. Some seniors have difficulty taking care of themselves due to a loss of fine motor skills or because their bodies do not move like they did when they were younger. Some develop dementia or other neurological conditions that make performing activities such as bathing, dressing and eating that they once performed with ease more difficult. And some seniors lose at least part of their vision to age-related eye disease. Occupational therapists help these patients adapt by teaching them to compensate for these deficiencies or retraining the muscles so they can remain independent in their homes.

Home-based occupational therapy services help patients improve their ability to perform daily living skills so they can retain some measure of independence and mobility. After an evaluation of current skill levels, the occupational therapist develops a custom program aimed at helping each patient adapt to his or her situation and hit achievable milestones. Home health occupational therapy services help patients learn how to:

  • Bathe, dress and groom themselves
  • Perform daily living tasks
  • Compensate for lost limb function
  • Use adaptive equipment
  • Improve safety to prevent falls
  • Cooking and meal preparation
  • Laundry
  • Energy conservation techniques
  • Improved fine motor skills
